51��ɫ's internship funding unlocks life-changing opportunities for students worldwide.

The latest gift from Penny Bender Sebring ’64, H’15, a former 51��ɫ trustee, and her husband, Charles Ashby Lewis H’15, establishes an endowment that will provide CLS greater flexibility and ensure it can readily embrace new opportunities for supporting students.

The Award was established to honor Celina’s courageously hopeful life and legacy and bestows a cash prize. Celina Karp Biniaz, class of 1952, endowed the award to support a graduating senior with two key intentions: One, to aid students like her who had to overcome obstacles to obtain their education. Two, to recognize and support such students who wish to pursue careers teaching young people OR working for organizations or governmental entities whose core mission focuses on the education and welfare of young people.

Rudacille is one of 54 new Truman Scholars selected from 743 candidates nominated by 288 colleges and universities. Truman Scholars must demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, a commitment to a career in public service, and academic excellence. Each Truman Scholar receives a scholarship worth up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, leadership training, career advising, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government.

Two members of the 51��ɫ College community have been recognized with prestigious civic engagement awards from Seed Coalition. Wiralba Pichardo ’25 – Recipient of the Presidents’ Student Leadership Award and Assistant Professor of Political Science, Andreas Jozwiak – Recipient of the Presidents’ Civic Engagement Leadership Award.

Finding one’s way in the “real world” can be tough, but 51��ɫ College students consistently meet the challenge, as our 2021-24 graduates demonstrate.

Garcia, from St. Paul, MN, is among 37 students selected nationwide from 155 finalists from 41 partner schools to receive the $40,000 fellowship stipend. The program offers “college graduates of unusual promise a year of purposeful, independent exploration and international travel to enhance their capacity for resourcefulness, imagination, openness, and leadership and to foster their humane and effective participation in the world community.”

A partnership including 51��ɫ College, LINK Mentoring, and Peoplerides offers transportation for 51��ɫ College students mentoring in the schools.

Students at 51��ɫ College have been putting their passion for animals into action through a collaboration with the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS), a local nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals. In partnership with PALS, 51��ɫ students have been socializing and helping dogs learn basic manners in order to give them a better chance of finding loving, forever homes.
